I was more interested in watching our latest movie, Quantum of Solace, than I have been for any of the films we’ve reviewed so far (with the possible exception of Connery’s return in Never Say Never Again). This is primarily due to the fact that though it hasn’t been that long since I saw Quantum in theaters, I had only seen it once and had all but forgotten what it was about. With that said, it is rather difficult to review this movie without allowing Skyfall to color my impression of it. This is in part because, unlike all the rest of the Bonds in the franchise, Daniel Craig’s Bonds have in some ways been a continuation of the same story. This is particularly true for this movie as it is the first to have a story line directly carry over from the previous one. At the end of Casino Royale, Bond shoots Mr. White, and then immediately at the start of Quantum he is being chased by baddies with the wounded Mr. White in the trunk of his car. Moreover, it is difficult to separate this film from Craig’s other movies because I feel like all of them have been telling the story of how Bond became Bond. So in a weird way, the last three Bond movies are really the first three of the franchise. But therein is the issue, because when you look at it from this perspective Quantum kinda out of place. It is not that Quantum doesn’t continue the story that Bond is a relative newbie at being a double-O, but that it seems so intent on setting up the storyline of a secret organization that is bent on world domination. A storyline that is by no means resolved at the end of Quantum – if anything they leave it wide open for future movies. Yet apparently this organization is so secret we hear nothing of it in Skyfall, which is why if feel Quantum is a bit out of place because it feels like it should have been Craig’s third movie, not his second. I will say however, that first thought at the end of Skyfall was “ok they’ve told the story of how Bond became Bond, now they are going go back to standard Bond foiling new world domination plot Bonds, but how are they going to do it?” Well I think Quantum solved that mystery for me. If you don’t see Bond fighting this mystery organization in future Bonds I will truly be shocked… shocked. The only real question is can they please just call this organization SPECTRE? Can we get a new Number One? Blofeld? That I do not know, but I thing I do know is that if Quantum is any indication, the movie itself will probably be put together extremely well. Words seem almost inadequate to describe my sheer joy at finally seeing a string of Bonds put together with all the elements that make great movies. The writing, cinematography, casting, acting, etc… in all these elements the Craig movies we have seen so far have been superb.
